In bygone times Nogale (18 km northeast of Talsi) belonged to Kurzeme Bishop Ārlava, but in the early 17th century it became the property of Frederick von Brunov. From 1710 to the end of the 19th century Nogale was run by the von Firkss family, who built a manor house with a grand Historicist interior there in 1880. Following restorations in the 1980s it has become a highly popular tourist attraction and site of various recreation events.
