Built in 1747, Spāre Lutheran Church (24 km from Talsi, by the Riga - Ventspils highway), is an exception amongst the Baroque churches of Kurzeme. Houses of worship in this region typically have a horizontal layout and consist of all the main elements of traditional medieval sacral architecture: a chorale, congregation space and tower. Conversely the Spāre church is a centric octagonal "cross church" without a tower, with the entrance on the wide side. The altar and pulpit are also sited on the structure’s wide side opposite the entrance.
